I guess when Aplle misses its target ("late March") then we Mac hypocrites don't say a word.
Nice.
"Apple". Damn iPhone won't even correct that.
R2's Take:
No Multi-task Pandora? Pass
DLMeyer's Take:
This is gonna sell a shitload of Kindle's!
My take:
I'll take two.
@MadMac:
It's about perspectives. When Microshaft misses a target, they miss by years...several years, in fact. Its not that me don't call Apple out. I'm sure there are others that will. However, we have to look at the degree of the missed target. If my memory serves me, the last time apple missed a target was the release of leopard--delayed by 6 months.
In this instance, missing it by a week or three , I would consider it as being trivial. Moot, even.
@silverwarloc
NO. Apple missed the set-in-stone deadline. THEY HAVE BETRAYED US. WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN US, LORD STEVE? WE BELIEVED IN YOU AND etc etc
But really, a week isn't a big deal. Anyone who says otherwise needs to get a life and stop hyperventilating about the slight delay of a product release.
Besides, you wifi-only buyers think YOU have it bad? I'm holding out for the 3G model! =P
"...reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3,
at an Apple retail store..."
Is Radio Shack an Apple retail store where I can
resrve my iPad ?
Will include 12 new Applications...
Yup, the iPhone was going to sell a tons of Windows Mobile phones.
Now, just tons of Windows Mobile phones in the land fill.
Analysts are like the palm reader I see along Third Street Promenade. Though, I think they have better predictions!
Will be ordering an iPad in a week!
Late again!! Can we assume now webcam will not be added in the twelfth hour?
@MadMac
LOL..... Missing that "late March" launch by a whole 3 days. Serious stuff.
If there had been a problem with the iPad, they wouldn't be able to resolve it in 3 days. It probably has to do more with logistics: training staff and/or shipment received date.
"reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store. "
This is something new - I wonder how this is going to work. Hopefully I won't have to wait 8 hours in line like I did for the iPhone.
The clock's ticking and I can't decide which model to buy... AAAgh!
Fuggit, I'll take a 64 gig 3G. It's only money, right?
Didn't YOU just say a word?
Oh, and to support silverwarloc above, Microsoft has been promising the world Windows Mobile 7 for a couple of years now, hasn't it? Well, it seems that they just delayed it AGAIN . . . AND MASSIVELY. But what's three or more YEARS among us hypocrites, eh?
http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2010/1/10/windows-mobile-7-definitely-delayed-to-2011.aspx
A delay of a week to make sure there are enough devices in stores to actually SELL is nothing, sir or madam, and you know it. But, then again, there's nothing like VAPORWARE to raise the holier-than-thou hackles of the great unwashed.
Before I read this story, I assumed that today's $5 pop in aapl's share price was due to the Zune phone announcement (on Gizmodo, Apple Insider, and elsewhere).
12 Pre-Installed Apps?
What are the missing three apps then?
I count only nine on the mock-ups and iBookstore is not going to pre-installed...
@twat
I'm guessing that they are the 3 flavors of iWorks that were demoed at the announcement. They are $9.99 each, but Apple probably preloaded them to allow you to demo them for a while before purchasing. Pretty smart.
@phxdoc
oh, you're going to wait in line alright, depending where you live, you could be stuck in line for hours just waiting for the store to open.
I'm saving for the 3G entry-level model.
Attention Apps Developers:
1. Develop an iPad app which allows us to use the iPad as an external monitor for our DSLRs, and you'll sell millions.
Heck, make it work for video cameras too, and substantially increase your market.
2. Sell a higher-priced version of your app which makes the iPad also able to control the camera.
You'll take over the pro photography market.
3. Sell a higher-level app that allows one to monitor, control the camera, and shoot and store the photos directly to the iPad.
You've now become the de facto standard for pro and pro-sumer photography (and video, if you so desire).
Pro (and non-Pro) uses of this app;
1. Put the camera on a tripod, the ground, fastened to a ladder, exterior of vehicle, etc., but with the iPad, control the camera as if it's comfortably in your hands.
2. Set up the iPad as an external monitor, so clients on location can see what your composing, or just use the iPad to quickly review shots for yourself, and/or clients and models.
3. Fasten your camera in a tree.
When the Red-Throated Balinese Warbler lands in it's usual spot, the camera will be there to take its picture, but you'll be on the ground (NOT scaring away the Warbler), watching your iPad in TTL view, and taking the Warbler's portrait as never before!
Anyone with a speck of imagination can see that the range of potential uses for this device is almost endless.
The Wow really does start now. Only, the real Wow is with the company that didn't pay for that advertising slogan.
Aarrggg, no Mexico release date!!
Anyone headed to cancun in April?
Bring me down an iPad, free boat trip for you!!
i wonder if Apple retail had any influence on the date. that is a light week for spring break and apple collge retail employees would be back in town by the 4/3. also, the lines should fly by since there is no activation required and all those iPod touch credit card readers that the employees use.
Nice news....but I'll wait for the version with the built-in video camera. Otherwise I can't justify the purchase at this time.
BTW.....I'm confused on the 3G version. Can one buy one, but not activate the 3G at purchase. Maybe come back later and do it? Or is this like the iPhone where it is all or nothing?
@ Rich Cam Apple --
Those are AMAZING ideas for iPad apps! I'm 100% serious. With imaginations like that, there truly is no limit to what this device could do. I only wish I knew anything about programming code so I could make these pro photography apps myself.
Glad to see the reservation system in place for the iPad! THANK YOU APPLE!
I did that when I picked up my iPhone 3GS and I'll do it for my iPad as well.
I just noticed on the Apple web page for the iPad that they say the FCC still hasn't authorized the device. Yet they're confirming the release dates...
"I'm confused on the 3G version. Can one buy one, but not activate the 3G at purchase. Maybe come back later and do it?"
@SaleenDriver: Yes — Apple says: "3G data plan sold separately." ...So until you buy a 3G data plan, you can use the WiFi to connect.
@Rich Cam Apple
Brilliant Ideas. The Motion Picture industry would buy them by the tens of thousands for shooters.
f that dl meyer guy he sucks so much
Well, for people outside the US, Apple promised WiFi model in late March. Now it's late April for both models.
So, they will be 1 month late with the WiFi model outside the US.
If they are shipping the iPads from the far east then it's totally feasible that the shipping schedule has delayed the release by a few days.
Most shipping companies are currently in trouble (see Maersk as one example) and they have all extended their voyages and are stopping at every possible port en route to maximise their cargo hold. For example, the schedule for my latest shipment of 950kg from UK to Singapore has gone from 22 days to 37 days, due to the ship stopping at an extra 17 ports to pickup anything they can to make a profit.
Sometimes even Apple gets affected by this economic downturn.
Patience is a virtue.
@Percy Veer
The 3G access will be something that you can pre-pay through the iPad itself, it's not something you buy in-store from what I understand.
I will be ordering an iPad, but will not be selling my Kindle DX. However, when the eyestrain from reading books on your iPad bothers you badly enough, I might sell you my Kindle (1G) at full price.
Apple wouldn't have missed its late March ship date if February hadn't been so short!
3 days delay might be a supply chain issue but I doubt it. I suspect it has more to do with marketing considerations. It eases the decision making process about picking up a 1st day product if no work is missed. Weekends are slow newsdays so they can expect better coverage and less of a pounce from the press over any hiccups.
Wah! Apple missed their iPad launch target by three days.
Wah! Apple has betrayed its loyal followers. Wah!
STFU! From where I am from, we won't be getting the iPad for another three to four months.
Screw you and your sense of entitlement!
@ Progressive Agent Provocateur
I currently read all day on my laptop and my iPhone without suffering this "eyestrain". The iPad's screen is supposedly even a better technology for reading than those 2 devices. What is it I'm supposed to be afraid of again? Bunch of hooey all this e ink garbage, IMO. How many people have to stare at CRTs all day still? Just wondering.........
Too bad you can't photograph the line of people waiting to pre-order the iPad. I'll be waiting in that one.
And how old are you?
@Jim
I believe they will fly the iPads to US. They are pretty light you know.
The Canadian web stie is now saying late April! By then there'll and upgrade or reduced pricing. Maybe both.
It's so amazing to me when people talk about "the mac faithful" and how they are obedient zombies who do whatever Apple tells them to do without thought or complaint.
That's so untrue.
As Roughlydrafted.com put it, "Mac users are, as a group, unsatisfiable whiners."
THAT'S the truth.
So yeah, we'll see whining about the 3-day delay on iPads. Because, far from being slaves to Apple, the "fans" are Apple's biggest complainers, who can never, ever be satisfied.
I'm sending my wife to the US to pick one up . It will delivered by the online Store to a friend's house.
Never had to do that before but I'm doing something time critical that requires an iPad.
I would probaly be the worst APPL investor, unless I just bought and held for retirement.
Why the big jump today
For those in Toronto who don't need 3G, join me in pre-ordering on March 12th for pick up at Walden Galleria in Buffalo, and then in the drive down early morning of April 3rd. No need to wait the extra four weeks for Canada to get them. I'll be popping into the Albright-Knox Museum while I'm there too.
Seriously, great news. I'm getting two 64GB models.
Where do you live Chano?
@ Rich Cam Apple
You're speaking my language. I dream of these sorts of things at night.
@ Progressive Agent Provocateur
"And how old are you?"
What does that have to do with anything? Because you're old you don't need to look at computer monitors all day? The Kindle may be easy on the eyes, but can you do your job on your Kindle? Can you get your email on it?
I spend as much time looking at computer monitors as I do at dead-tree books, and my eyes tire of each at about the same rate.
@ chano
@ Hotinplaya
Looks like we might need to set up an iPad smuggling cartel. I wish I could afford to go back to Mexico to help you out!
"...more intimate, intuitive and fun..." as opposed to "the funnest", but good to see Apple using proper English at least.

Stand Aside here comes iPad
