Solution: Don't take your iPad into the sauna?

Jul 27, 10 - 11:44 am Comment from: Rike

Is that the Devil himself suing Apple? No wonder it overheats, look where it has to operate!

Jul 27, 10 - 11:45 am Comment from: HMCIV

Don't preheat your iPad in the microwave.

Jul 27, 10 - 11:45 am Comment from: ron

My girl friend overheats in warm conditions - can I sue?

Jul 27, 10 - 11:46 am Comment from: RePlay

It's kind of like reading reviews on Amazon…toss out the 5% best reviews and the 5% worst reviews to get a true picture of the product; this is one of the tossers.

Jul 27, 10 - 11:48 am Comment from: ron

Does MDN slow down in warm conditions? It's slow to load this morning.

Jul 27, 10 - 11:50 am Comment from: theloniousMac

Oh come on. I use my iPad constantly. I've never noticed heat.

Jul 27, 10 - 11:56 am Comment from: Mike in Daytona

Just another wannabe frivolous suit that will add more needless hype. What are these space cadets thinking? Living here in Florida in the midst of a heat wave / drought and using 2 ipads daily, hourly in and outside... of course no failures. Bottom line is, if you don't like a product you buy, then return it. I see noone twisting arms forcing buys......

Whiners are bad enough... cost me $$ and I get more than annoyed

Jul 27, 10 - 11:56 am Comment from: Randian

Welcome to the new ILSA: The Insanely Litigious States of America. Will this kind of chicken-crap EVER cease?

Jul 27, 10 - 11:56 am Comment from: Macromancer

I coulda done without the politically motivated MDN take...

but OMFG i put my ipad in a sleeve and i cant see the screen. DESIGN FLAW im suing.

I served sushi on my iPad and now it smells fishy, IM SUING!!!

Jul 27, 10 - 12:01 pm Comment from: gksmith

I think the key to this case is right there in the first sentence:

"Apple Inc., the world’s most valuable technology company..."

Jul 27, 10 - 12:01 pm Comment from: A Canadian in our little desert

Up where I live it get to 40c all the time in summer. I'll be watching for this when I get mine next month

Jul 27, 10 - 12:04 pm Comment from: m159

@Macromancer

"I coulda done without the politically motivated MDN take..."
I second that motion.

Anyone ever heard of the results of these sorts of suits? My guess is they're mostly fruitless. Has of these greedy rats hit a home run against Apple in court?

Jul 27, 10 - 12:04 pm Comment from: PaKo

Pads are supposed to be soft. The iPad is hard. That's all wrong.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:04 pm Comment from: Drhufufur

Direct sunlight is one of the best ways to heat an iPad up pretty quickly. That black bezel just sucks up the heat energy.

I do tend to watch TV/browse the web in the bath however (not porn, honest) so maybe I should be a little more careful with the condensation thing.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:05 pm Comment from: Davidlow

Does it overcool in cold conditions?

Jul 27, 10 - 12:11 pm Comment from: D Boy

@Ron lmao sue all women who heat up!!!

Jul 27, 10 - 12:12 pm Comment from: Mac4lfe

Bullspit. I work outside in the middle of summer in a tropical climate and my iPad stays as cool as a cucumber whenever I use it. Most valuable tech company is like a lawsuit magnet.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:15 pm Comment from: leodavinci

Politically motivated MDN take?

It appears more and more people coming here have no sense of humor.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:15 pm Comment from: Major Flaw

It doesn't run Adobe Flash, so I can't fry my eggs on it.
I'll sue!

Jul 27, 10 - 12:16 pm Comment from: Dragon 59

You can always count on the moron element to sue maybe they can sue the sun for being too hot !!

Jul 27, 10 - 12:18 pm Comment from: biansta

Don't hold it that way!!!

Jul 27, 10 - 12:20 pm Comment from: LonelyLibertarian

Next comes the MSM coverage of this new Apple quality concern...

Overheating iPads threaten Apple's brand!!!!!!

I can see the Gizmodo headlines now....

We live in a world were these things get way too much attention - way too much....

Mine has overheated once. I have the black Apple case and left it in the sun for a while, maybe 20 minutes, and got a heat warning. Not terribly unexpected, mind you. But it does happen.

Like, snap out of it! Don't you realize the world is coming to an END in 2012?

That's funny.

@ Macromancer,

"I served sushi on my iPad and now it smells fishy"

There is more than one way to get your iPad smelling fishy.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:38 pm Comment from: NCG598

Ummmm, sounds like a global warming issue. Has Al Gore pounced out of his castle to rally the science to stop this effect on the iPad.

Quick Al! We have to cool the planet or all slate will stop working by 2012!!!!

"My girl friend overheats in warm conditions - can I sue?"

yes, you may have a case!, Why don't we set up a meeting, where I can take a deposition , heck I'll do it Bono!

Jul 27, 10 - 12:42 pm Comment from: RicMac

@First 2010
I appreciate the fact that living in your dream world of a conservative republican mop up in November is your way of coping with the current political climate. I really do.
However you need to give some thought to what you are going to do when that does not turn out to be the case. History points quite clearly to the fact that while there will be some republican gains in congress this November, for the most part republicans have surrendered the majority control of government for the next 40 years, more or less. The reality is, that while Europeans would call the most liberal democrat in the US something of a conservative; by our own standards we are drifting towards a more progressive era. Get used to it. And no, we won't become communists anytime soon.

I MEAN SUE!

Jul 27, 10 - 12:49 pm Comment from: Botvinnik

I've had that happen to me when sitting outside in the sunshine reading, but it wasn't after two or so minutes, was more like a couple of hours. Also, the Oklahoma sun gets pretty hot in the summertime, so I won't be suing Lord Steve-o over this. Here's my novel solution after 58 years of research about the sun and how effin hot it is in the summer: I turn off the iPad and go in the house.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:53 pm Comment from: @RicMac

Yes, we are becoming more European in many ways and this is a growing trend.

Oddly, as Europe runs out of other peoples money, they are starting to become like we used to be. Farming more off to private companies, making government smaller, and fighting the unions to save or cut cost in benefits, extending retirement ages, cutting benefits to union and citizens, and giving doctors control that was once handled by the government. Should we follow the leaders as they change to keep from bankruptcy? NEVER!

Damn the icebergs-full speed ahead......

Odd.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:55 pm Comment from: Zaphod

My iPad doesn't overheat, and use it every day in Hawaii. It's pretty hot/humid here.....

Jul 27, 10 - 12:56 pm Comment from: Kevin J. Weise

@RicMac,

That's a nice try, but it will turn out to be a wasted effort. Lunatic fringe like First 2010 don't listen to anything except extreme party rhetoric and ideology. The more you try to reason with them, the more ideologically pure and belligerent they become. The best thing to do is to ignore the trolls; but I admit, it's really difficult.

Jul 27, 10 - 12:58 pm Comment from: CitizenX

It's a feature. Any well designed electronic device is going to shut down when it overheats.

Jul 27, 10 - 01:00 pm Comment from: First 2010, then 2012

RicMac, etc.:

Keep dreaming. Now for some facts. Note the polls below are of "Likely Voters (LV)" as opposed to the meaningless "Registered Voters (RV)" that other polls use:

Rasmussen, July 26: Generic Congressional Ballot: Republicans 46%, Democrats 36%

Rasmussen, July 23: Three-out-of four voters (75%) prefer free markets over a government-managed economy

Libs, keep lying to yourselves. Everything's going to be just fine. You have control for the next 40 years. Heck, make it 140 years. No need to worry. No need to make sure you vote because everybody votes Democrat.

Libs: Your base isn't big enough and you lost the admittedly vapid "Independents" over a year ago.

Gallup: In 2010, Conservatives Still Outnumber Moderates, Liberals
Last year's increase in conservatism among independents is holding

Conservatives have maintained their leading position among U.S. ideological groups in the first half of 2010. Gallup finds 42% of Americans describing themselves as either very conservative or conservative. This is up slightly from the 40% seen for all of 2009 and contrasts with the 20% calling themselves liberal or very liberal.

The 2010 results are based on eight Gallup and USA Today/Gallup surveys conducted from January through June, encompassing interviews with more than 8,000 U.S. adults. The 42% identifying as conservative represents a continuation of the slight but statistically significant edge conservatives achieved over moderates in 2009. Should that figure hold for all of 2010, it would represent the highest annual percentage identifying as conservative in Gallup's history of measuring ideology with this wording.

Gallup: USA 2010:
42% - Very Conservative, Conservative
34% - Moderate
20% - Liberal, Very Liberal

The ideological orientation of Americans seen thus far in 2010 would represent a record-high level of conservatism (since at least 1992) if it is maintained for the full year. This follows an increase in the percentage of conservatives in 2009 that was fueled by heightened conservatism among independents, a pattern that continues today.

Gallup, June 25: In 2010, Conservatives Still Outnumber Moderates, Liberals

I can't wait for November 2nd!!!

Jul 27, 10 - 01:04 pm Comment from: Kevin J. Weise

As to the original thread, I've always believed that making the plaintiff's attorneys responsible for court costs and subject to punitive damages (on behalf of the defendent) when they lose BS cases like this ought to help prevent this kind of legal abuse.

Jul 27, 10 - 01:05 pm Comment from: Kevin J. Weise

@RicMac,

See what I mean? Lunatic fringe.

Jul 27, 10 - 01:07 pm Comment from: Madmoney

"I left it in my car, along with my children while I went into Walmart. It was a nice day, 95 degrees and because I was going to leave my iPad in the car I made sure I rolled up the windows and locked the doors. When I came out both my children and my iPad was unresponsive. I'm suing Apple because my iPad wouldn't work when I got in my car. I need money to pay for the kids funeral".

Jul 27, 10 - 01:08 pm Comment from: Jennifer

Kevin J. Weise,

If anything's "fringe," it would be Liberals who are outnumbered 2-1 by Conservatives according to Gallup.

Funny, but predictable, how the Libs' posts above contain no sources, polling, or facts.

Jul 27, 10 - 01:22 pm Comment from: First 2010, then 2012

RicMac and Kevin,

You're both invited to my party on November 2nd. We're having multiple HD screens showing MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS talking heads trying not to weep plus plenty of refreshments, party hats, free T-shirts, and <a >adult beverages</a>!

Jul 27, 10 - 01:35 pm Comment from: melgross

This is nuts! I live in NYC, and we've had a heat wave here for at least two weeks, with weather going over 100 degrees. I've had my iPad out in 95 degree weather, in the Apple case, carried in a black leather and nylon over the shoulder case (which gets hot!), and when taking it out and using it, never had a problem.

People here who know me know that I won't hesitate to criticize Apple when they deserve it, but this is one area in which they've done very well.

It's always possible that there are a few units that are defective in some way, possibly the batteries, but there's no way this is a general class action problem.

Jul 27, 10 - 01:39 pm Comment from: NHL

I left my vinyl album on the radiator heater last January. The album melted and wouldn't play. It still won't!
My excellent mixed-tape cassettes on the dashboard in July, are not working anymore. At all!
Is there a lawyer out there who will <strike>gladly take my money and pretend to try to sue record and cassette makers</strike> help me fight these evil, monstrous, cassette and record makers?!

I mean, really, my two cases are way more serious (they were terminal!) than an electronic device that goes into sleep/save mode when the temperature is too high.

Help! Help!

Jul 27, 10 - 01:47 pm Comment from: Steve516

@NHL - your mix tape cassettes contained pirated, stolen, and copyright protected materials. I expect you will be hearing from the lawyers very shortly.

Jul 27, 10 - 01:57 pm Comment from: bbock

Is there not an Apple flaw or mistake that Mac Daily News will not defend to the death?

I have an iPad. I was outside in San Francisco (not a city known for warm weather) in late may. It was warm (in the high 70s, low 80s) and I was standing in the sun in line for tickets. My iPad overheated and had to be turned off. Yes, the iPad over heats even when the ambient temperature isn't beyond the operational specifications.
