I don't think so. A phone is a phone first and and [pick your gadget - camera - mp3 player] second. The cell phone market is very penetrated already by some very large players. This isn't Apple's core competency and I think they should stay away. However they could make some great design contributions to any major cell phone company.

What´s Steve going to say tomorrow - buy a phone that holds itunes and you won´t need an ipod to carry around anymore??? I don´t think Steve wants to give that message.
This motoipod phone is more of a defensive measure by Apple to get itself in this niche market - do they really want people to stop buying ipods and buy the Motorola phone instead? I don´t think so. The only money Apple would make off this is via iTunes - in other words nothing.
In the music biz Apple makes the big profit off the hardware, not the the tunes.
For Apple this motoipod phone is big P.R., but small business.

Apple registered "iPhone" as a trademark in Australia a while ago.

Don't know if they could use it in the US tho. iphone.com is owned by nuvio I think - at least that is where it jumps to.

I would love to have an Apple Phone but it would probably not work in Japan for quite a while.

I repeat. I do NOT want my phone's battery to power music playing. It's a wonderful convienience to have music in your phone (call waiting etc.) and even a camera... but realistically I want the phone battery to last as long as humanly possible and I'm not willing to sacrifice that to listen to music when I have the phone to talk to people.

Whatever the cababilities are incorporated to the say "iPhone" it have to include a function as beeing a "bluetooth mouse" and why now interoperate with some HiFi equipments too. Then I will definitely have to buy one, and all with a portable computer will want it too. Because why carry a bluetooth mouse and a mobile phone, and why search for a right remote controller among at your home.
Apple "please release me" from my burden of lot of remote's.

The analysts are hoping to prevent a "fallout", and perhaps encourage
a "buy in". Holding your breath...gambling. Grasping for straws...

hmmm. On the surface an iPhone looks attractive. Nearly everybody has a phone and they upgrade often. But there's a problem with manufacturing phones, and that is the network.

The networks control which phones can connect to their system. This is untenable to Jobs. The iPod has succeeded because the user can get their music from CDs (90% of music on iPods was ripped from CDs), which are not platform dependant.

An iPhone will require certification by a network, and the networks don't do it lightly. Essentially the manufacturers kowtow to the networks or their phones never see the light of day, look at how long it has taken to get a nework to offer the ROKR (iPod) phone from MOT?

No, Jobs will establish a crack in the phone market first. Then on the strength of ROKR sales, MAYBE, he will introduce an iPhone. I'm betting he won't.

What rubbish. So long as it's not a phone restricted by a pre-paid deal, which is closed only for a certain period anyway, you can buy any phone and stick a SIM card from any carrier and bang, you're connected.

That's the way it works in Australia anyway. Maybe in the land of capitalism what Gregg said might be true, which would be somewhat ironic.

Every phone I've ever owned - Moto, Nokia, and Sony/E - has eventually given me the shits, especially the Sony/E.....urgh! I have absolute confidence that Apple could design a phone, its OS, user interface and software - i.e. the whole widget - that would leave every other manufacturer in the dust.

apple isnt stupid, i bet apple coordinate with motorola, learn from them, learn about cell phones, their production techinques, technology etc, and then release their own apple phone.
